Wanoga Mt. Bike Area USDA Approved

Bend OR May 29th, 2008

After years of discussions, environmental studies and a plethora of meetings, The Central Oregon Trail Alliance is very proud to announce approval of our new joint project with the Deschutes National Forest/USFS/USDA, the Wanoga Mt. Bike Event Area

The new system, approximately 12 miles from town on Century Dr, will consist of a new trail head and over 30 miles of single track, with a diversity of terrian and difficulty levels, this new system will be a great addition to our current trail network, which as we know, already gets great reviews in bike industry rags as well as among mt. bike advocacy groups such as the International Mountain Bike Association.

COTA would like to thank all members and volunteers who's hard work has brought this project to fruition. Now let the trail work begin!

Thank You,

Kent Howes, Central Oregon Trail Alliance

Save the trails. Go ride in the desert.

Please avoid all the trails west of town for the next couple weeks. The mud season is upon us, your actions now greatly affect how the trail system rides for the rest of the year. There's plenty of places to ride right now where there isn't mud. The Maston, Horse Ridge and Smith Rocks/Grey Butte are all riding great right now. In those areas, any mud riding is not as harmful as it is west of town.

Mud riding etiquette:

Avoid trails you know are muddy.

If you arrive at a trailhead and find the trails muddy - go elswhere.

If you come across an area of muddy trail that you must ride through - stay on the trail! Riding around mud puddles widens our singletracks.

Dry River Closure

A seasonal wildlife closure is in effect on high desert public lands east of Bend located on the Prineville District of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

The temporary closure is located in Dry River Canyon, which is located north of State Highway 20 approximately 20 miles southeast of Bend. The closure is adjacent to Horse Ridge viewpoint and includes the entire canyon in addition to all public lands within one-quarter mile of the rim of the canyon.

The Dry River Canyon closure is effective February 1, 2008 and expires August 31, 2008. Wildlife biologists will periodically monitor the sensitive wildlife habitat that is protected by the closure and determine whether the closure area may be opened for public use at an earlier date than scheduled. Posted signs located adjacent to the closure will help the public identify and avoid the closed area.

If the areas can be reopened prior to August 31, the closure signs will be removed. Seasonal wildlife closures affect a very small percentage of the public land base that is accessible to the recreating public. The closure is a legal requirement directed by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act to provide protection for sensitive wildlife. Under the authority of federal regulations, violators are punishable by a fine not to exceed $1000 and/or imprisonment not to exceed 12 months.

To view an electronic map of the Dry River Canyon closure area, visit the website at www.fs.fed.us/r6/centraloregon/news/2006/01/dryrivercanyon-closure-map-2006

For additional closure information, contact BLM's Gavin Hoban at (541) 416-6879 or Gavin_Hoban@blm.gov.
